If you have ever been to the Chinatown Youth Center (CYC), you know it’s not much to look at. A humble green and black walled venue with plywood floors and very unique acoustics, shows there are the very definition of “Fresno Underground”. Last Friday was no exception. However, as is usually the case, the small room was packed with energy and talent as a plethora of musical styles and personalities prepared to take the stage.

The surprise of the night was a solo effort by one of local band Fierce Creatures’ lead vocalists, Mathr de León. The warm reception of the crowd fueled the always awesome singer in his first performance as Deleón. The tightly composed electric songs behind his vocals were well done and by the end of his short set the crowd were dancing their hearts away.

Achievement House was up next. The lead vocalist, with her very sultry voice, captivated the audience and had everyone mystified by the end of the show. The addition of a new member was a big surprise as well. Colby Tibbet, of Elmo Marconi and Fast Car, held it together and brought his distinctive penchant for unbridled enthusiasm to the stage and it couldn’t be more welcome.

Next came the amazing Animal Eyes. It is very rare that you find a band that can seamlessly incorporate a trumpet and an accordion in the same song and still make it a blast to listen to. Their high energy songs had everyone on their feet and you could feel the floor move. Take a listen to their song “Leaves” and try not to tap your foot. I dare you.

Last but not least was Morning Teleportation. To describe with words how much raw talent these guys have is impossible. Their music is very eclectic in the way their songs are put together, switching tempos multiple times and never letting up until the last second. They had so many tricks up their sleeves and so much energy that you are likely to be left speechless. Which is alright because it was so loud, nobody would be able to hear you for at least ten minutes after. Their performance was beyond great and made a killer ending to a great line-up.

The bottom line is that CYC may have a reputation for DIY punk/hardcore but this night proved that indie kids can dance just as hard. So all-ages look out, because it looks to be the first of many more to come.

Scott is currently attending FCC trying for a BA in something or other. He loves music, poetry and a good ol’ cuppa joe. When he’s not blending or brewing, you’re likely to find him at a show. He knows what’s up.

Nick is a photographer from Pennsylvania who somehow ended up in Fresno. We’re certainly thankful for that… even if his veins do run black and yellow. He’s got a thing for Apple products and loves the outdoors. If you ever have a planned occasion that you don’t want forgotten, look no further. You can see more of his work HERE
